Sneak Peek – Leaving Earth

I mentioned – at least I think I did – the other day that the ZHaCC is launched… So I thought I might give you a sneak peek of a part of that launch, so… without further preamble…

Enjoy.

“Stand ready, Ladies and gentlemen,” the captain ordered, just as Kolya’s steady voice began an ever-decreasing roll call of numbers.

Twenty, nineteen, eighteen…

Derby turned his eyes to the forward screen, where the slow change of color in the view showed the descent of the Radiation Shield across wrap around viewing port; from clear, through amber into a gentle umber, settling like some giant pair of sunglasses on the pointed nose of the ship.

Ten, nine, eight…

Derby took a deep breath, taking in one last look at the station, and beyond it, the sight of Earth beyond it. A sight he knew he would never likely see again. He knew that when he’d signed on for this mission, but now, as the moment approached for the launch of ZHaCC on her one-way mission, the true meaning of separation hit him hard, right in the gut.

Five, four three…

He took a second, deep breath as Kolya voiced the final numbers, and then, himself, breathed, “Separation,” in unison with the near expressionless voice echoing across the bridge.

“Take us out, Mister Ashton, steady as you go.”

“Aye Sir, Ahead, steering speed only,” Ashton confirmed, and as the seconds passed, Derby slowly began to feel the building rumble of the engines that maneuvered the massive ship forward, away from the orbiting station.
